Understanding NJ Auto Insurance Coverage

Auto insurance policies are divided into different coverages based on the type of claim that will be paid to the policyholder, or insured. These coverages include:

1. Personal Injury Protection (PIP) – provides for medical coverage for injuries the policyholder (and others) suffers in an auto accident. PIP is oftentimes referred to as “no-fault” coverage because it pays the policyholder’s own medical expenses, regardless of who caused the accident. PIP has two parts — (1) coverage for treatment the policyholder receives from hospitals, doctors and other medical providers and (2) reimbursement for certain other expenses the policyholder incurs as a result of the injury, such as lost wages and the cost of hiring someone to take care of the insured’s home or family.

 2. Liability — pays others for damages from an auto accident that the policyholder caused. It may also pay an attorney to defend the insured if he or she is sued for damages. There are two kinds of liability coverage: Bodily Injury and Property Damage.

a. Bodily Injury Liability Coverage — pays for claims and lawsuits by people who are injured or die as a result of an auto accident caused by the insured.  It compensates others for pain and suffering as well as economic damages, such as lost wages. Bodily injury liability coverage is typically given as two separate dollar amounts: (1) an amount paid per individual and (2) an amount paid for total injuries to all people injured in any one accident.

b. Property Damage Liability Coverage — pays for claims and lawsuits by people whose property is damaged as a result of an auto accident caused by the insured.

3. Collision Coverage — pays for damage to the insured’s vehicle as the result of a collision with another car or an object.

4. Comprehensive Coverage — pays for damage to the insured’s vehicle, which is not a result of a collision. Coverage is provided for things such as theft, vandalism, flooding, fire, or a broken wind-shield. However, it will pay if the insured collides with an animal.

 5. Uninsured Motorist Coverage — pays the insured for property damage or bodily injury if he or she is involved in an auto accident caused by an uninsured motorist.

6. Under-insured Motorist Coverage — pays the insured for property damage or bodily injury if he or she is involved in an auto accident caused by a driver who is insured, but who has less coverage than the insured has under-insured motorist coverage.
